CONSERVATION WORK
Situated in the middle of 1,800 hectares of lush forest vegetation, Samboja Lodge is the perfect place for you to learn first-hand what it takes to rebuild a forest and protect its wildlife.
During your stay you will find yourself in the middle of our East Kalimantan Orangutan Reintroduction Program at Samboja Lestari which cares for and rehabilitates displaced or orphaned orangutans who were rescued from areas of habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. The centre is also home to one of the world’s largest sun bear sanctuaries.
Both programs, as well as the Lodge, are run by the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation. The Foundation's story started in 1991, with the establishment of a modest rehabilitation centre in East Kalimantan, in response to the many orangutan lives displaced due to the illegal pet trade. However, in the decades since, our role has grown immensely.
Before the construction of the lodge was completed, the plot of land at Samboja Lestari was nothing more than grasses and weeds. This is when the first tree was planted. Today, a thriving secondary forest provides habitat for birds and countless other wildlife species.
The BOS Foundation continues to work together with local communities, the Indonesian government, and the greater global community to fight extinction, and to conserve orangutans and their habitats in several sites across Borneo.
