why choose us

You can see orangutans and other wildlife

The orangutan is a critically endangered species only found wild on the islands of Kalimantan (Borneo) and Sumatra. The BOS Foundation’s Samboja Lestari centre in East Kalimantan is both a rehabilitation facility and sanctuary for orangutans that have tragically lost their natural habitats due to human interference. The orangutans that come to Samboja Lestari are cared for by our professional team with the aim to someday be released back to a natural, protected habitat. However, not all of the orangutans in our care can be released back to the wild; some are handicapped, and others have physical or mental illnesses, or behavioural disorders caused by their traumatic past experiences. Most of the orangutans that come to us will eventually be placed on the man-made islands nearby, which guests of Samboja Lodge can visit accompanied by one of our guides. Visitors can also see sun bears and other wildlife at the centre, including a wide variety of bird species, squirrels, and tropical insects.

Money supports a worthwhile cause

All the money you spend at Samboja Lodge will be put directly back into the conservation work undertaken at Samboja Lestari. Therefore, when you visit us you are also donating to this worthwhile cause and helping the orangutan conservation effort.

SAMBOJA LESTARI TODAY

Samboja Lodge is a venture of Borneo OrangUtan Survival (BOS) Foundation. Here visitors will be able to gain first-hand knowledge on what is required to rebuild a forest and protest its wildlife, especially in our effors to preserve the rainforest and critical endangered bornean orangutan.

The cosmetic touches are all traditional handicraft and are produced by local and dayak communities around the area.
